In the Cards

Patricia stood up from her chair and stared at the light. She was filled with absolute calm as she looked at the light growing steadily brighter and brighter. All the fear that she had felt earlier had melted away. She took in a deep breath and slowly exhaled as she looked up at Tabitha. She was cringing up against the wall consumed with terror.

“No! No! It can’t be true! You were destroyed long ago!” Tabitha clung against the wall. She turned away her face in fear of Patricia.

The light on the table began to grow. It surrounded Patricia’s body from head to toe. She could feel the tingling sensation of something powerful surging through her veins. Her clothing began to change into long, flowing robes laced in gold. It glittered like the moon and felt like pure energy! Images of things that Patricia had never seen before began to fill her mind. She looked at Tabitha and remembered.

“Demon from hell! You have escaped long enough!” Patricia said with power and authority. She raised her hand and pointed at Tabitha. A beam of white light shot out from the end of her fingers and pierced Tabitha it the heart.

“Ahhhh! No!!!” she cried in agony. Patricia towered above her like a righteous god as she poured light into the old woman. Tabitha let loose a horrible scream then fell to the floor with a thud!

The cards circling the room suddenly fell out of the air and lay scattered on the floor. Patricia lowered her arm and stood there as the light that surrounded her began to fade away. The ordinary clothes that she was wearing earlier replaced her long flowing robes. She was back to old self again. Her mind was still fresh with what just happened. She couldn’t believe it! She found a light switch and turned on the lights. The room was in total disarray with paper, books and cards spread all over the floor! In the corner was the body of Dr. Katz. Patricia raced to her side to see if she was still alive.

“Are you OK?” Patricia asked as she knelt over Dr. Katz.

“I… I don’t know,” she said in a daze. “One minute I was about to start a reading and the next minute I’m here on the floor!” She struggled to get up on her feet but immediately slumped into her chair. “What happened?”

She told Professor Katz about the entire experience and when she finished they both sat there in the silence.

“I wish I knew what the third card was,” Dr Katz asked. “It would answer a lot!”

“Well,” Patricia responded, “I guess we’ll never know.” She got up and turned to leave.

“I hope you aren’t too shaken up by all of this,” Dr. Katz said slowly.

Patricia just smiled. “Actually, for the first time in my life I feel like I know what I was meant to be.” She turned and walked out the door.

Pagan and Wiccan fiction and short storiesDr. Katz began to pick up the mess. She was still amazed at Patricia’s story. She couldn’t remember anything of what had happened. It just seemed too fantastic to have actually happened. But, then again, Dr. Katz was trained in the occult and was used to experiencing strange things. She gathered her cards and counted them to see if she had all of them. She let out a small gasp when she turned one of them over. It had an image of Patricia dressed in a long flowing robe with a pair of scales in one hand and a sword in the other. Dr. Katz immediately recognized the card.

It was Justice.
