“Now listen to me because this is very important.” Dr. Katz took off her glasses and stared directly into Patricia’s eyes. “I’m going to summon my spirit guide, Tabitha. She is an ancient spirit that has helped me with readings in the past. When she comes, she will inhabit me and I will look very different than I do now. Don’t be alarmed. This is normal. Do not say anything when she is speaking… she doesn’t like to be interrupted.” Patricia just sat and listened as Dr. Katz continued. “Wait until after I have dismissed her to ask any questions.” Dr. Katz paused and gazed deeply into Patricia’s eyes. “Do you understand?”
“Yes.”
Patricia picked up the deck that was in front of her and began to shuffle it. Dr. Katz lit another incense and leaned back in her chair. The smoke from the incense began to swirl in front Dr. Katz covering her completely. As Patricia shuffled the deck, she noticed that they seemed to be vibrating slightly, almost as if they were breathing.
“These cards feel like they are alive!” she thought to herself as she shuffled.
“They are!” whispered Dr. Katz in response. “They are a link to your subconscious and to the world of the invisible, where everything and nothing exist together as one!”
When Patricia finished shuffling the deck, she placed it back on the table. She selected three cards and laid them face down in front of her. She waited to hear what to do next but Dr. Katz didn’t say anything. She just sat in her chair rigid as a statue. Suddenly and without warning, she gasped for air as if she were choking. She drew in a long breath and exhaled slowly. Then, she slowly opened her eyes.
Patricia couldn’t believe what she saw. Professor Katz’s eyes were now glowing green! When she leaned forward Patricia almost let out a scream. Professor Katz was somehow transformed into someone much older than what she was before. Her face was horribly wrinkled. Her hair was now streaked with gray and seemed to dance about her head like if it were alive! The room had now become much colder. Patricia could see her breath rising in clouds in front of her face as she breathed.
Patricia leapt to her feet and went for the door. She turned the doorknob but the door refused to open. She was trapped!
A voice filled the room. “I am Tabitha. I have been summoned here for a reading. Sit and I will tell you everything!” Her voice filled the room like ether. It echoed in front of her, behind her and all around her until Patricia couldn’t tell from which direction the voice was coming from because the old woman did not move her lips!
“Sit and all shall be revealed!” The bodiless voice echoed. Tabitha’s green eyes glowed eerily in the darkened room.
Patricia slowly fell into her chair and sat still, gripped with fear. It was terrifying to look at the old woman. Her hair continued to writhe about her head like snakes. She extended a bony, old finger and pointed at the cards on the table. The first card flipped itself over on the table! It was the number thirteen, the death card!
“You have come here seeking knowledge of the future,” the disembodied voice whispered. “You will, “ the voice continued, “experience a change in your life that will be unlike anything you have experienced before!”
The air in the small room got colder by the minute. Patricia was shaking uncontrollably. “An experience that will change my life forever?” thought Patricia, “what could that mean?”
“All will be revealed in time my child,” cut in Tabitha’s bodiless voice. The second card turned itself over to reveal a single large sword in the center of the card… the ace of swords.
“Ahhh…” the voice whispered with a hint of surprise, “I see you becoming a leader, yes, a champion! Great power is yours if you are not afraid to embrace your destiny!”
This information surprised Patricia. She had never been a leader at anything in her life! And power? That too was something that she had in short supply. How could this be her destiny?
Finally, the third and final card turned itself over. The voice let out a horrific shriek as the body of Tabitha began to shake uncontrollably. The hair on her head began to dance wildly as a cold blast of wind rushed into the room. The cards began to swirl around and around like a whirlpool. A faint light began to glow at the center of the table.
